Codfish Island

Codfish Iceland or Whenua Hou is a small South Pacific island west of Stewart Island in southern New Zealand. It is 14 km ²; the highest elevation of 249 m above sea level is located near the south coast.

The English name of the island is derived from a fish, the blue cod ( Parapercis colias ), which is also known as Boston blue cod, New Zealand cod or sand perch ( sand perch). The Maori described the island as " new country " ( Whenua Hou ).

Population

The island is uninhabited. At times, live some biologists at Sealers Bay. The only means of transport to the outside world then the helicopter. Since the land is not permitted on the island without a special permit, there are hardly any tourists on the island.

Conservation

Codfish Iceland is a bird sanctuary. The conservation project is primarily used to protect the kakapo, an endangered, flightless bird from the family of authentics parrots ( Psittacidae ), whose stock has fallen sharply in the last century.
