Codogno

Codogno is a town with 15,439 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Lodi in the Italian region Lombardy. It is 58 km southeast of Milan, 25 km southeast of Lodi and 15 km north of Piacenza.

Geography

Codogno is the center of the Basso lodigiano, the fertile plain between the lower course of the Adda and the Po. The municipality consists of the villages Maiocca and Triulza.

The nearby towns are Camairago, Casalpusterlengo, Cavacurta, Fombio, Maleo, San Fiorano, and Terranova dei Passerini Somaglia.

Traffic

The ancient course of the Via Emilia is obtained in the course of the Via Roma and Via Vittorio Emanuele. The modern Strada Statale 9 Via Emilia (SS 9 ) performs west of the city by over Lodi to Milan. The nearest motorway exit for Piacenza Nord is on the A1 Autostrada del Sole.

The train station of Codogno is a hub with connections towards Piacenza, Cremona, Pavia and Milan.

History

Codogno was founded in the 3rd century BC with the formation of the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul. However, the place probably goes back to a pre-Roman Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the bishops of Lodi. In 1965 Codugno the municipal law.
