Cody is a place in Park County in the U.S. state of Wyoming and also the seat of the county. The city was by William Frederick Cody, known as Buffalo Bill, founded in 1896 and named after him. Cody is the birthplace of Jackson Pollock, a famous American painter.

Geography

The place Cody is at an altitude of 1500 m above sea level. NN ( 5016 feet) on the Shoshone River and covers an area of 24.9 km ² (9.5 mi ²). The Shoshone River runs through the town and formed by the confluence of the North and southern branches, about 5 km west of Cody at Buffalo Bill Reservoir ( a dammed by the Buffalo Bill Dam reservoir).

In the north of Cody is the Heart Mountain, a 2400 m high mountain in the south are the Carten Mountains with 3400 m height.

Cody is located 80 km east of Yellowstone National Park. A road over one of the bridges over the river in Cody leads directly to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

West of the town, by the river, is an area now almost extinct volcanoes. In the 19th century it was named after the first white men in the region, the trapper John Colter as Colter 's Hell. Washington Irving is mentioned for the first time in his book on the fur traders Benjamin Bonneville. The name of Colter 's Hell was later transferred to the Yellowstone area just 100 km west Boasting a mix-up.

Rodeo is part of the culture in Cody. The city bills itself as the " Rodeo Capital of the World" ( " Rodeo Capital of the World ").

Traffic

At the south-eastern outskirts of Yellowstone Regional Airport is a 2,100 × 25m-Start-/Landebahn. Most of Yellowstone Park tourists who arrive by plane, land here. Line connections exist to Salt Lake City and Denver.

In Cody furniture is produced in western style.
