Coffee County (Alabama)

Coffee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Elba, when an additional Courthouse is also available in Enterprise. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Alabama, is about 40 miles from Florida's Northern border and has an area of ​​1762 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pike County, Dale County, Geneva County, Covington County and Crenshaw County.

History

The Coffee County was formed on December 29, 1841 from parts of Dale County. It was named after General John R. Coffee, a hero in the Creek War Of 1813 bis 1814., The first county seat of the county was in Wellborn. After the county courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1851, were moved to the seat to Elba.
