( English: [ kɔɪ̯mbətɔ ː r], Tamil: கோயம்புத்தூர Kōyamputtūr [ ko ː ː u ː r jʌmbɯt̪ ], also briefly Kovai Kovai கோவை [ ko ː vɛi ] ) Coimbatore is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in Coimbatore district in the west of Tamil Nadu, near the border with the state of Kerala. The population is almost 1.1 million in the city proper and 2.2 million in the agglomeration ( 2011 census ). Thus, after the capital Chennai Coimbatore is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu.
Coimbatore is an important industrial center. Of importance is mainly the textile industry, which is why Coimbatore is known as the " Manchester of the South".
