Col -des- Roches at Le Locle

K

The Col des Roches is a bottleneck between the Swiss canton of Neuchatel and France. It is located between the towns of Le Locle and Morteau.

The valley of Le Locle is west terminated by a 100 m high rocky ridge. Since 1805, the road overcomes this obstacle with a tunnel without gradient on the Swiss side. The street level is 919 m. The limit is 80 m west of the road tunnel, after the turnoff to the village of Les Brenets. The railway line La Chaux -de-Fonds - Besançon crosses the mountain in a tunnel located further south.

The creek flows through this obstacle Le Bied in karst caves before ( a tributary of the Doubs ') reappears on the other side as La Rançonnière. In the caves, the cave of Le Locle mills were operated from the 16th to the 19th century, which can be visited today. Since 1890 the water power is utilized by the power station La Rançonnière with a gradient of 80 m.
