Cold Spring is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of San Jacinto County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located 110 km north of central Houston in Orange County, in southeast Texas, is in the south about 140 km from the Gulf of Mexico, to the East and about 130 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 4.8 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first name of the settlement was Coonskin. Under this name it received in 1847 the first post office. Within a year, it was renamed the Fireman's Hill and Cold Spring in 1850 and 1890 to Cold Spring. 1870 was the place the county seat.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 691 people in 263 households and 180 families. The population density was 145.0 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 66.28 % White, 31.40% Black or African American, 0.43 % Native American, 0.58 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.00 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.30% were Mixed Race and 3.18 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 263 households 34.6 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.1 % were married couples living together. 20.5% were single mothers and 31.2 % were non-families. 28.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.5 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size amounted to 2.91.

27.8 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6 % from 18 to 24, 26.8 % 25-44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 86.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,083, and the median income for a family $ 30,729. Males have a median income of $ 31,667 versus $ 23,750 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,777. 19.6 % of the population and 19.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 18.9 % have children under the age of 18 and 13.6 % of those 65 or older.
