Colegio de San Gregorio

The Colegio de San Gregorio is a historic building in Valladolid. It now houses the Museo Nacional de Escultura. It was founded in the late 15th century as a theological college of the Dominican Order.

The University of Valladolid was founded in the 13th century by Alfonso X, the Wise. This also meant that over time in addition to or in conjunction with the University so-called Colegio (comparable to the British Colleges ) emerged.

The creation of the Colegio de San Gregorio went back to Alonso de Burgos, Bishop of Palencia, Dominican monk and confessor of the Reyes Catolicos. With papal approval, work began in 1488 with the associated grave chapel of the bishop.

The construction of the college may have been completed in 1496. The College was home to approximately 20 students. Its graduates are well-known theologians and artists such as Bartolomé de las Casas, Melchor Cano, Luis de Granada and Francisco de Vitoria.

In the 19th century, the function of the building complex ended as a theological college, since April 29, 1933, is the seat of the National Sculpture Museum.
