Colen Campbell

Colen Campbell ( * 1676, † 1729 ) was a pioneering architect of Scottish origin who spent most of his career in England. He is considered the founder of the Georgian style.

Vitruvius Britannicus

His most important publication entitled Vitruvius Brittanicus, or the British Architect ... appeared in three volumes 1715-1725. These were mainly a collection of engravings of English buildings and projects of construction, mainly by Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, Campbell himself and of other outstanding architects of his time. The buildings were occasionally shown in elevations, sections and floor plans, in perspective views. Campbell's selection took into account mainly influenced by the Palladian buildings and contributed significantly to its dissemination in England. This collection is considered the first in English to "The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture " by John Shute.
