Coles Group

Coles Myer Ltd.. was until 2007 an Australian company that operated a variety of chain stores. Today, the Coles Group is one of Wesfarmers. Myer is now the largest department store chain in Australia.

Early history

The story leads back to the year 1900 as Sidney and Elcon Myer opened a store in Bendigo. At the same time in 1906 the company Coles opened its first store in Melbourne. Both companies grew in Australia through growth and acquisitions, and both were listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. In the 1980s, Coles Myer business operating mainly supermarkets and retail stores. The two companies joined together in 1987 to Coles Myer.

Business

The company has a variety of business fields:

  • Myer: luxury department stores with a wide selection, a fashion brand, luxury goods, similar to the " Grace Bros " in New South Wales until it was renamed in 2004 Myer.
  • Coles Supermarkets: one of the supermarket chains in Australia.

Corporate interests

Although the company enjoys a strong presence in the Australian sales industry, its profitability and the share price since the merger in 1987 suffered a lot. The flagship of the company, Myer stores are now regarded as " category killers" because they offer a " too large " number and type of products. This store Myer goes away from the traditional department store.

Its supermarket business also has a strong competition, with his rival Woolworths Limited. Woolworth offers cheap gasoline as alternative purchase. In June 2003, Coles announced that the stations (in Australia) take over from Shell to deliver the same offer.

Coles Myer also tried the " Toys R Us " format in which it was built several "World 4 Kids " stores in populous cities of Australia. This cost the company many millions of Australian dollars. The "World 4 Kids " brand was later implemented as a toy goods department in Kmart.
