Coleta is located at 41 ° 54'08 " north latitude and 89 ° 48'08 " west longitude and covers approximately one square kilometer. The town is the center of Genesee Township.

Coleta is approximately 30 km east of the Mississippi. Towns nearby are Milledgeville (9,1 km north- north-east ), Sterling (19,8 km southeast) and Morrison (23,9 km southwest).
