History

In 1965, Charles J. Colgan Sr. and 16 shareholders formed the Colgan Airways Corporation with headquarters and main base at Manassas Airport, Virginia.

In 1970 the company started on behalf of IBM with scheduled flights from Manassas to Washington Dulles. 1986 were served by the hubs Washington National and Washington Dulles with 9 aircraft to 12 cities. In the same year the company was sold to President Airlines.

After the collapse of President Airlines began in 1991 Charles J. Colgan and his son Mike Colgan with only one aircraft rebuilding of Colgan Air Inc.. In July 1997, Colgan Air started a codeshare agreement with Continental Airlines for shuttle flights under the name Continental Connection.

In December 1999 another code - share agreement with U.S. Airways for flights followed under the name U.S. Airways Express. Another agreement was followed in October 2005 with United Airlines for flights under the name United Express. On 15 January 2007 acquired the Pinnacle Airlines Corp.. , Owner of Pinnacle Airlines, Inc., Colgan Air

As part of the acquisition of Mesaba Airlines by the parent company, Pinnacle Airlines Corp.. was announced that Colgan Air as part of a restructuring should stop operation and its fleet would be turned over to Mesaba. This should in future all turboprop aircraft of Pinnacle Airlines Corp.. operate while the sister Pinnacle Airlines concentrated on jets. Mesaba Airlines, but in the meantime been disbanded and integrated into Pinnacle Airlines. On April 1, 2012, Pinnacle filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11, but will air operations maintained until further notice.

On September 5, 2012 Colgan Air held its last flight and stopped the operation.

Destinations

Colgan Air was flying in codeshare feeder service as United Express and U.S. Airways Express from major hubs, such as Boston, Houston, New York, Pittsburgh and Washington to medium and small airports in the United States. Since February 2008, she operated for Continental Connection flights also from Newark.

With cessation of the fleet of Colgan Air consisted of 60 aircraft:

  • 29 Saab 340B

Incidents

  • On 12 February 2009 a Dash 8Q -400 crashed in Clarence, New York. It was Continental Airlines Flight 3407 from Newark to Buffalo. All 44 passengers, 4 crew members and another driver out of service and a person on the ground were killed.
