Colgate -Palmolive [ NYSE: CL] is a multinational corporation with headquarters in New York, NY, (USA). While the Germanized pronunciation of the company name is common in Germany, we used the U.S. in Austria and Switzerland.

History

In 1806, William Colgate founded the soap factory Colgate & Company in New York, USA. 1872 Colgate led a new product, Cashmere Bouquet, a perfumed soap. In 1908 she sold her first tube of toothpaste.

In the West, the United States began in 1864, the BJ Johnson Soap Company with the production of soap from palm oil and olive oil. The soap was so popular that the company chose for her company name - Palmolive.

The Palmolive Company in 1926 together with the soap manufacturers Peet Brothers to Palmolive Peet Company. Finally, in 1928 the Palmolive Peet Company and Colgate & Company merged to form Colgate Palmolive Peet Company. Not until 1953 that the company was changed to today's Colgate- Palmolive Company.

In the early years of television, the company Colgate- Palmolive, Procter & Gamble competed as a sponsor of soap operas. Later, the actress January Miner was hired 27 years as " Madge " advertised ( in German television as "Aunt Tilly " ) for Palmolive dishwashing liquid, with the slogan " You're soaking in it" ("You just bathe your hands therein "). On the German market Colgate came in the '50s on as a competitor to the Persil detergent Henkel company, but could not prevail.

In 2004, Colgate -Palmolive took over the Swiss GABA group, which produces, among other dental care products Aronal, Elmex and Meridol and was able to improve their standing in the market.

The main competitors include Henkel, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt Benckiser and The Clorox Company.
