Collegium Maius

The Collegium Maius is the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

History

The Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364. 1400 acquired II Jagiello from the estate of Hedwig of Anjou the house as the seat of the University of King Władysław. The house has been extended several times, in the courtyard created cloisters. In the mid-15th century, the building "Collegium Maius " was named.

On the ground floor lecture halls were, upstairs the " Stuba Communis ", the library and living quarters for professors.

In the 19th century the building was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style and adapted to the conditions of the library.

After the relocation of the collections to the new building of the Jagiellonian Library, Collegium Maius was the seat of the University Museum.
