Collingwood Ingram

Collingwood "Cherry" Ingram ( born October 28, 1880 in London, † 19 May 1981 in Benenden, Kent ) was a British officer, traveler, botanist, gardener, dendrologist and ornithologist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Ingram ".

Life

Collingwood Ingram was the grandson of Herbert Ingram, co-founder of the English magazine The Illustrated London News, and the son of Sir William Ingram. During World War II he served in the Royal Flying Corps.

In addition to his activities as a collector in South Africa and Asia Ingram was known as a breeder of Japanese ornamental cherry trees, which earned him the nickname " Cherry".

The plant taxa described by Ingram include gladioli from South Africa, rhododendrons from Japan and cherry species from Persia and Japan. In addition, Ingram wrote the scientific first descriptions to Vogeltaxa as Lichenostomus virescens forresti ( subspecies of Pfeifhonigfressers ) to Turnix maculosus horsbrughi ( subspecies of spotted running chicken ) to Eudynamys scolopaceus harterti ( subspecies of the Indian koels ) to Taiwanschuppentimalie ( Pnoepyga formosana ) to Nucifraga caryocatactes owstoni ( subspecies of Tannenhähers ) to Mirafra javanica rufescens ( subspecies of Horsfieldlerche ) to aegithalos caudate taiti ( subspecies of the Long-tailed Tit ) and Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus ( an endemic subspecies in the Pyrenees of the capercaillie )

Memberships and Honors

Ingram was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, the Linnean Society of London and the British Ornithologists ' Union.

Oldfield Thomas named the Northern Flathead bag mouse ( Planigale ingrami ) and Ralph Anthony Blakelock the Silver-studded kind Cytisus ingramii in honor of Collingwood Ingram. In addition, cultivars of rosemary, the fan - maple and Japanese flowering cherry bear his name.

Collingwood Grange, the former estate of Collingwood Ingram in Benenden, is now a private park, are shown in the varieties of rhododendrons and Japanese cherry trees.
