Colmenar, Málaga

Colmenar is a village and a municipality north of Málaga, in Andalusia in the district of Axarquia.

Colmenar has the typical communities of this kind infrastructure: the mayor's office, police, school 1 to 10 class, shopping for daily needs, several hotels, a retirement home, health center and pharmacy. The Fiestas will delight in the vicinity of a large inflow. There are a wide variety of typical Spanish ( easier) tapas bars and farmed by some Spanish, English and Dutch restaurants. The high unemployment meets the community with a program to promote tourism, especially for hikers. It publishes several free maps with route descriptions from the environment.

The place name Colmenar (Spanish for " Colmena " for: beehive ) goes back to the apiary, which for a long time laid the foundation for economic prosperity earlier. The seven bees ( it stand for the seven-day week the beekeeper ) and the hive are since 1877 part of the parish seal and since 1980 the present coat of arms.

Colmenar can be reached by motorway from Malaga (leaving Antequera ) via the expressway from Vélez -Málaga and on the highway A-7000 ( old name 345). This trip leads you along the nature reserve of Montes de Malaga.
