Coloma is located 9 miles from Placerville. In the valley of the southern branches of the American River at Coloma gold was found in 1848 at the building site of Sutter 's Mill. The discovery triggered the California gold rush. Experienced the gold mining town at that time flourished, the place is now threatened by the status of a ghost town. Much of the city is designated as Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The city also has the status of National Historic Landmarks.
