Colonius

Colonius is the dedicated on June 3, 1981 telecommunications tower on the inside canal street in Cologne, which is not accessible to the public. He is the highest in North Rhine -Westphalia and is the seventh highest telecommunications tower in Germany. At the time of its completion the Colonius was 252.9 meters high. In the early 1990s, the spire was replaced and replaced by a longer one. The height is now 266 meters. In April 2004 the spire was replaced by a helicopter to allow the broadcasting of digital TV in the Cologne-Bonn area. The tower height remained constant. The tower was built by the Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG. The name was given to the tower as part of a competition among citizens of Cologne.

Building

In 166 meters there is a three-story control tower, the lower floors to the cafeteria with an observation deck ( closed since 1999), as well as a restaurant host with a rotating seating area. On the upper floor of the control tower technical systems Telekom are housed. Until 1994, this floor also a Leitplatz radio Telekom was housed. Which was tasked to monitor different channels and radio links and control.

On the tower run two elevators, capable of a speed of six meters per second, a third of the elevator travels up to 174 meters (technical level) and a staircase with 925 steps. On the outside of the pulpit is attached a neon sign Telekom.

Revolving restaurant and nightclub

The two-story visitor area is no longer accessible to the public. Since 1994 there is no tenant for the revolving restaurant and the overlying, sometimes used as a discotheque, area. The disco came in the early 1990s in the headlines when a panic broke out on New Year's Eve because of overcrowding among the guests. The observation deck has been closed since 1999.

New Tenants

In 2008 the radio tower on the occasion of architecture festival was "Plan 08" transforms by means of a light show in a sculpture. The formative group of architects planned, starting in 2010 with the " Colonius Award", then a recurring annual competition between international light artists to revive the tower. This goal was to date ( 2012) no realization. In the offices of the entrance building houses since 2009, two architectural firms.
