Colonna, City of Rome

Colonna (Italian for column ) is the III. Rione (neighborhood ) in Rome. It covers the southern part of the Campus Martius to the Piazza San Silvestro and the Palazzo Montecitorio

History

The name is derived from the Marcus Aurelius Column ago, standing on the Piazza Colonna in the district. The medieval name of the district was Regio Columne et Sancte Marie in Aquiro.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows three oblique stripes on a white background. However, it is also a coat of arms with a column on a red background used, which corresponds to the Colonna family, whose palace is also in the neighborhood.
