Columbia (name)

Columbia was a poetic name for the United States and North America, which was created in the 18th century and in the 20th century gradually fell into disuse. Still bear the areas District of Columbia and British Columbia that name. The name is derived from Christopher Columbus.

Columbia was also a female personification of the United States national, comparable to the male Uncle Sam, the British Britannia, the French Marianne, the German Germania, the Austrian Austria, the Italian Turrita Italia or the Swiss Helvetia.
