Columbus Checkers

The Columbus Checkers were an American ice hockey franchise in the International Hockey League from Columbus, Ohio. The venue for the Checkers was the Ohio Expo Fairgrounds Coliseum.

History

The Columbus Checkers were established in 1966 as a franchise of the International Hockey League. Your First Game of the new team on October 12, 1966 in a preseason game against the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. In the four years of its existence, they never make it past the first playoff round, where the playoffs were not reached at all in the season 1966/67 and 1969/70. Due to a low spectator section and the resulting financial problems the leaders decided to make inactive the franchise in 1970. A year later it was reactivated by the California Golden Seals as their new farm team and renamed Columbus Golden Seals.
