Column (botany)

The gynostemium (Greek γυνή gyne = "woman" and stemon = " lift " or " chain on a loom "), even column, column style or small columns is a special floral organ in plants. It arises from the coalescence of a stamen (sometimes two or more) with style and stigma.

A gynostemium comes in monocots only orchids ( there is also called Columna ), Pauridia and Corsia ago in dicots they are found inter alia in the shot plants, Osterluzeigewächsen, Lopezia ( Onagraceae ), the Apodanthaceae and the Rafflesiengewächsen.

It is not to be confused with the tubular, formed from the fused bases of the stamen bunch of Columna Malvoideae, the Androgynophor the passion flower plants or the Gynostegium the milkweed plants.
