Colunga

Colunga is a place in the east of the Spanish province of Asturias. It is the capital of the homonymous municipality and is located directly on the Cantabrian Sea. The Way of St. James ( Camino del Norte) runs through the city.

History

Finds in the caves of Obaya evidence of a settlement already in the Old Stone Age. In the district there are some hills (eg: La Riera, La Isla and Villeda ), which were already inhabited before the Romans. The most famous certainly El Castiellu at La Riera with its built in terraces defense system, which are interconnected by a series of ramps. From the top of a long horizon can be monitored. In the Middle Ages, the church of Sta. María de Libardón, Santiago de Gobiendes and Sta. María de Tuna emerged. The present city was administered by the local nobility. King Alfonso X granted the town officially the City rights.

Economy

Colungas port and the associated fisheries are among the most important in Asturias. A high priority have the land and especially forestry. Famous are the large apple orchards. For several years, tourism is growing.

The place is a station on the Camino de Santiago Camino de la Costa. In La Isla 4 Km away there is a house for pilgrims: Albergue de Peregrinos "La Isla " - La Colonia, s / n - 33341 -La Isla ( Colunga ) over the 18 places available.
