Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz, often only Comandante Ferraz is a Brazilian research station in Antarctica. It is located on King George Iceland, Keller Peninsula, on the Baía do Almirantado ( Admiralty Bay), the same location as the former British station G. It was from the research vessel Barao de Tefé transported to the island and took part in the February 6, 1984 their operation. The station is named in honor of the Brazilian Antarctic pioneer Luís Antônio de Carvalho Ferraz. On February 25, 2012 it was completely destroyed by an explosion in the generator room and the consequential major fire. Two members of the Brazilian Navy died in the fire.

The base

The station was initially assembled from eight 37.5 -gallon corrugated containers, which provided a total of twelve people. Later the base was expanded with additional modules. It occupies an area of ​​about 2600 m². By 2004, 60 rooms were set up in which 46 people were housed. The station resembles a small town in the middle of the Antarctic ice. There are storage rooms, workshops, a library, living rooms, recreation rooms, a hospital, communication facilities, a gymnasium and cafeteria and dining room. Near the station there is a helipad.

The base was occupied throughout the year; Operation prevailed around the clock. The administration of the basis is for the Brazilian Navy. Military are stationed permanently on the base and are changed regularly.
