Comandante Luis Piedra Buena

Comandante Luis Piedra Buena is a place in the department CORPEN Aike Santa Cruz province in southern Argentina. It lies on the left bank of the Río Santa Cruz on the Ruta Nacional 3 from the provincial capital Rio Gallegos is 231 km and to Caleta Olivia, it is 467 km. Buenos Aires is located 2250 km away.

History

The first settlement took place on the initiative of Luis Piedra Buena in 1859 on Isla Pavón. The island was originally named Islet Reach or Isla del Medio according to the report of the English sailor Pringles Stokes in 1827, who took part in the expedition of Robert Fitz Roy. As Capitán Luis Piedra Buena here about 1859, landed no one remembered this name, which is why he called in memory of the battle of Pavón, Isla Pavón. He took it for Argentina in possession, some families moved to and built himself a house, which served as a residence and defensive at the same time. This house, reconstructed on the foundations of the original house, now a museum. The Isla Pavón remained in the aftermath stopover or starting point for many expeditions into the interior of Patagonia or Antarctica.

In the meantime, the colonization of the Isla Pavón shifted to its present location in the city. On January 11, 1880 by the central government, the establishment of a pastoral colony, Colonia Santa Cruz, respectively. The issue of land ownership by a subsequent government decree of November 9, 1899 contributed to the expansion of the settlement. The new settlers called the place El Paso or Paso del Río Santa Cruz. These names were gradually replaced by the name Paso Ibáñez, which proves the first settlers in the new location honor. The new name was given by an official decision of 20 May 1920 establishing the Comisión de Fomento Paso Ibáñez official recognition. It was only on August 2, 1933, the site receives by Decree 25 987 of the then National Government the name Comandante Luis Piedra Buena. In 1968 stipulates that the name of the place is written according to the notation de namesake in two words. But both spellings exist in practice still side by side.

Tourism

The Isla Pavón is located between the two bridges in the Ruta Nacional 3 over the Río Santa Cruz. Next to it is the Isla Los Guindos, which got its name from the cherry trees that had anspflanzen together with raspberry bushes the founder and namesake of the city Luis Piedra Buena. The islands and the shoreline on the river are the preferred destination of Piedrabuenenses and tourists. Among the offerings in this area include camping, outdoor pool and a children's playground.

Sport fishing in salt water variant expands the tourist offer on the banks of the Río Santa Cruz and Isla Monte León.
