Comasagua

Comasagua is a comune ( municipality ) in the department of La Libertad in El Salvador.

History

The settlement history of Comasagua goes back to pre-Columbian times the Pipilen population. 1533 the area was discovered by the Spanish Conquistadores. 1740, the village at the edge of the Cordillera del Balsamo was first mentioned as Comatzahua, Cutmatzahuat in the literature. In a local report of 20 November 1860 listed, that at this time some 500 people lived in the community and there were 205 houses and two churches. The Act of 28 January 1865, the community became part of the political-administrative district of Nueva San Salvador and La Libertad.

In 1890 Comasaqua 1,895 inhabitants. 1924 Comasaqua received city rights (Villa ). On 13 January 2001, the city was heavily damaged by an earthquake with a 7.6 magnitude ( Richter scale ).

In the census end 2013 12.839 inhabitants were registered. The municipality covers an area of ​​75.05 km ² and is situated at an altitude of 1070 meters ( msnm ). 74.75 km ² correspond to the rural areas. The town center has an area of 0.3 km ².

Economy

Comasagua was and still is a settlement of farmers, whose ancestors cultivated plants and Balsam Balsam products manufactured, and later followed the cultivation of coffee. Economic activity is complemented by other agricultural productions, such as: breeding of cattle, pigs, horses, mules and poultry.

Attractions

Among the tourist attractions in the area include visits to coffee plantations and with a trail, showing the process from planting to harvest and visit the Finca San Ernesto, the only well-preserved colonial mansion in the area as well as the Parish Church of St. Matthew the House of Culture in the city center.

The surrounding the place cool subtropical rainforest contains several notable tree species, such as balsam trees, medlar and cedar, oak, walnut, cypress and pine. The main rivers and streams in the hilly local interest include San Antonio, El Refugio, Cuyanigua and La Máquina.
