Combermere Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey and in England. The monastery is located about five kilometers northeast of Whitchurch in Shropshire and approximately 12 miles from Nantwich in the extreme south of the county of Cheshire.

History

That the Congregation of Savigny belonging convent was built in 1133 by Hugo de Malbanc ( Hugh Malbank ), the men of Nantwich donated. The monastery was richly endowed, inter alia, with salt pans in Nantwich. In 1147 it merged with the Congregation of Savigny the Cistercian order in which it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. In Wincle in the Forest of Macclesfield, a grange was built further in, more in Dodcott, Ditchley, Smeaton, Heyfields, Shifford, Cliff, Chesthill, Newton and Yarlet. The monastery, operating an extensive sheep farming, founded three monasteries daughter: Whalley Abbey, first in Stanlow, Dieulacres Abbey, first in Poulton, and Hulton Abbey. 1245 received the abbey the right to hold a fair in Drayton. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the abbey was repeatedly placed under custody. In 1309 there were clashes with Richard Hurst of Full and inhabitants of Nantwich. Later the abbey, which was characterized by numerous disputes impoverished. In 1379 it was still inhabited by 10 monks. 1446 Abbot Richard Alderwas was killed by a farm worker. 1496 the monastery was freed because of his poverty of charges. In 1538 the monastery was confiscated by the crown, and then awarded to George Cotton and remained until 1919 owned by the family. The plant is owned by the Viscount Garnock. The existing well to a large park and a lake ( Comber Mere ) is part of a dairy operation with rental cottages.

Plant and buildings

The dissolution of the monastery was of the buildings, only the abbot's house from around 1500 left, which probably occupies the site of the former east wing of the exam. It was built 1814-1820. In 1972, parts broken away. The church's position is north of Abtshauses suspected. Several other buildings are more recent.
