Combined diesel and gas

A CODAG drive ( for Combined Diesel And Gas ) is a driving concept in the shipbuilding industry, appearing for the diesel engines and gas turbines together on the drive shaft (s). The first ships that were built with this system were the frigates of the F120 class of the German Navy.

The advantage of a CODAG drive is in lower fuel consumption by the drive diesel in conjunction with short-term switchable gas turbines for maximum speed. A disadvantage is the complicated design of the gear, since very different services need to be processed simultaneously (in the order a few thousand kW diesel, gas turbine, some ten thousand kW).

CODAG drives are often used in the warship.
