Combined diesel-electric and gas

The CODLAG drive ( COmbined Diesel Electric And Gas ) is a Engine, furnish to the diesel generators power to the electric traction motors and is switched in a gas turbine to achieve the top speed. This system is to be installed in the new F125 frigate of the German Navy.

Advantage of this system is that only one type of diesel generators will be installed for the entire power supply to the ship, which minimizes the maintenance and repair expenses.

In contrast, a system of diesel engines and / or gas turbines that produce only power for the driving motors, and have no mechanical connection to the screw shafts, not CODLAG but as an integrated electric drive (English Integrated electric propulsion (IEP ) or Integrated full electric propulsion ( IFEP ) ) respectively.
