History

As in the 1930s, the talkies replaced silent film, slapstick was replaced by humorous dialogues and wit. This came many new comedians in the business, and often occurred as a group or comedians such as Abbott and Costello, the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy or the Marx Brothers. There were also comedians such as WC Fields, Mae West and Jack Benny, who built their success on their wit.

In the 1950s and 1960s in Italy the genre commedia all'italiana was popular.
