Comfort noise

Comfort noise (English comfort noise ) is a framework of digital signal processing artificially generated noise, which is used in the digital transmission of human language for filling pauses in speech.

Applications are wherever means of audio codecs Voice signals are digitally compressed. Examples are the digital mobile as GSM and VoIP. Comfort noise is always used together with a squelch, which suppressed side of the speaker all the sounds at a certain volume level.

Comfort noise creates the illusion of a further existing connection without taking up the otherwise necessary for the transmission of noise data rate on the network with the listener in pauses. Without comfort noise would complete silence occur in pauses, which has a disruptive effect usually on the listener.
