Comins Mansfield

Comins Mansfield ( * June 14, 1896 in Witheridge (North Devon ), † 28 March 1984, Painton ) was an English composer of chess.

Chess composition

Mansfield learned as a nine -year-old to play chess from his father, who played nationally active correspondence chess. His first tasks published Mansfield 15 years. Within 65 years he composed about 980 Two Züger. He won more than 100 first prizes. His chief merit lay in his contribution to the development of the classical two Zügers in the 20th century.

He was Grand Master of Chess Composition in 1972. He was among the first four composers to whom this title was awarded by FIDE. He was the first British grandmaster ever.

His compositions are characterized by original ideas, strict economy, clarity and expressive power of thought. A two Züger topic bears his name:

A white battery is controlled by two black figures. Bind is one of them yourself, the battery with the exclusion of the other mat can give.

From 1949 to 1951, Mansfield President of the British Chess Problem Society ( BCPS ), 1963-1971 President of the Permanent Commission for Chess Composition in the FIDE ( PCCC ).

Private

His unusual first name Comins is a reference to the good work of two sisters Miss. Comins, who had raised his father and goes back to his mother's decision to not want to use incredibly long name.

Comins Mansfield had three children.
