The Committee to Protect Journalists ( CPJ ) is a resident of the United States, non-governmental organization which campaigns for press freedom and human rights of journalists worldwide.

The committee was founded in 1981 by a news editor from the Columbia Broadcasting System and the chief editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. The occasion was the arrest of a reporter from Paraguay. Among the early members were Walter Cronkite, Anthony Lewis and Dan Rather.

The CPJ is funded by donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, but does not accept grants from governments. In 2010, the organization spent a total of about 3.6 million U.S. dollars.

In his headquarters in New York, the CPJ employs specialists for the five regions of Europe and Central Asia, Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Africa and America.
