Spotted electric ray (Torpedo torpedo )

The spotted electric ray (Torpedo torpedo ) is a ray species from the family of electric ray. He lives off the coast of southern Spain, North, West, and South West Africa, it takes its name from eye-like spots on his otherwise brownish back. The ray species generated to stun prey and for defense surges up to 200 volts.

Features

The spotted electric ray has the typical, slightly wider than long disc shape his family. The top is brown with large, blue dots, the underside creamy white. Adult male specimens are up to 60 cm tall, female to 41 cm.

Way of life

Spotted torpedo usually stay on a sandy bottom in shallow depths, but are also found in depths up to 400 m. They are solitary animals and hunt at night smaller fish and invertebrate marine life. Spotted torpedo rays are ovoviviparous and bring 3 to 21 babies at that are about 9 inches tall.
