The company ( also French Compagnie ) described earlier in the commercial language of a social or cooperative -run business.
In the 17th to 19th century companies like the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company flourished. In a narrower sense, one speaks here in the area of long-distance trade of trading companies.
The terms Company and Compagnie are to be distinguished in this sense from the additional Compagnie ( usually abbreviated as Co. or jr. ) In companies.
