Compostela Valley

Compostela Valley is a province in the southeast of the island of Mindanao and is one of the island nation of the Philippines. The province is politically associated with the District Davao Region, the Region XI.

The seat of the provincial administration is in the town Nabunturan.

The governor of the province is called Atty. Jose R. Caballero.

Geography

West of Compostela Valley lies the province of Davao del Norte, Agusan del Sur to the north and east Davao Oriental. In the southwest is the coastline of the Gulf of Davao.

In particular, the eastern part of Compostela Valley is mountainous, while the south runs flat to the coastline towards. To the east is the layer of volcanic Leonard Kniaseff.

The province has an area of ​​4667 km ².

Demography and language

According to the census of 2007 living in Compostela Valley 637 366 people. The province is in the vital statistics so that the 44th rank.

The population density is 136.6 people per km ². This means the 19th place of the lowest populated provinces in the demographic statistics of the Philippines.

Most of the residents are descendants of immigrants from the Visayas who settled in Mindanao in the 20th century. Other groups of immigrants were the Ilocanos, the Tagalogs and the Ilonggos.

Together with the indigenous peoples of the Ata Talaingod, the Dibabaonon, the Manguwangan, the Mandaya and the Mansaka they make the province a melting pot of cultures.

The languages ​​used principally in the province are Cebuano / Visayan and Tagalog. In addition, the dialects Mandaya, Mansaka, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, Waray Waray -, Maranao and Suriganonon be used by minorities in the province.

Economy

The main source of income of the province residents is agriculture. Here, rice, coconut, pineapple, coffee and bananas are mainly grown.

Climate

History

Compostela Valley was, together with Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur and Davao City to a former great province named Davao.

The Republic Act No. 4867, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos on May 8, 1967 it was divided into the provinces mentioned.

Davao del Norte was originally in 13 autonomous communities divided managed. On May 6, 1970 were added 6 more. A passage of Republic Act No. 6430 of June 17, 1972 changed the name of the province of Davao del Norte, Davao.

In 1996 the number of municipalities increased by the formation of San Vicente (now Laak ) in 1979, 1988 and Maragusan Talaingod in 1990, to a total of 22.

On January 31, 1998 President Fidel V. Ramos to Republic Act No. 8470 to secede the province of Compostela Valley from Davao signed.
