Comps (Gard)

Comps is a commune with 1654 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

The village is near the border of Provence- Alpes -Cote d' Azur on the Rhone River. In the vicinity are towns such as Nîmes, Arles, Saint -Rémy and Avignon and Tarascon Beaucaire.

History

The place has an age of 2,600 years. The village life was determined from the Pic de l' Aiguille, in whose caves the people settled and from where you had a good view of the Rhône. On the rock there was a fortified settlement in the Roman period. The area was dominated by the Abbey of Saint-Roman and of the attack of Charles Martel to the neighboring Théziers. Above all, however, the Rhône is crucial for the history of the place: Through its floods and their changing course she had great significance for the development of the village. 1790 Comps was separated from the municipality Vallabrègues on the other Rhône page. Through the municipal area leads the modern TGV route.
