Con Leahy

Con Leahy (actually Cornelius Leahy; * April 27 1880 in Charleville, Ireland, † November 18, 1921 in Manhattan, New York City ) was an Irish athlete and Olympic champion.

Leahy grew up as one of seven brothers on the land between Cork and Limerick. All the brothers were outstanding athletes. 1901 was conducted by Patrick Leahy on the global leaderboard in the high jump. 1902, 1904, 1905 and 1908 led to Con Leahy and 1910 Timothy Leahy list.

Three Irish athletes, John Daly, Con Leahy and Peter O'Connor went to the 1906 Summer Olympics in Athens. There they learned that only recognized National Olympic Committees were authorized to start. They could therefore not compete for Ireland, but started for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The competition in the high jump won Leahy with 1,775 yards and 2.5 cm ahead of Hungary Lajos Gönczy. After his victory, it was clear to Con Leahy still trying to 1,83 meters, but this height he ripped twice and then ended the contest. Shortly thereafter, Leahy also took part in the triple jump. O'Connor won with 14.075 meters before Leahy, who jumped 13.98 meters.

At the Olympic Games in 1908 Leahy took part again in the high jump. Behind the US- American Harry Porter, who won with 1.90 meters, occupied three jumpers, each 1.88 meters in second place: Géo André, István Somodi and Leahy.

1909 emigrated Con and Patrick Leahy to the United States.
