Conan III, Duke of Brittany

Conan III. (* 1095, † September 17, 1148 ), called the thickness ( le Gros ), Duke of Brittany and Count of Nantes was. He was the son of Duke Alain IV ( Cornwall House ) and Ermengarde of Anjou.

He succeeded his father when he abdicated in 1112. In the security alliance with the Capetians Louis VI. , The king of France, who protected him against surprises from the east, he took up the fight against the feudal lords, which he did bring the country great strides in preservation of the public peace. Conversely, he united his army with the Louis VI. in its fight against Henry I., king of England, although he was having an illegitimate daughter of Henry, Mathilde ( † after 1128 ) married.

Descendants and succession dispute

With Mathilde he had three children:

  • Hoël († 1156 ), Count of Nantes;
  • Berthe († 1158/64 ), ∞ I) Alain " the blacks" Penthièvre, lord of Richmond, ∞ II) Odo († 1170 ), Viscount of Porhoët;
  • Konstanze († 1148 ) ∞ Gottfried III. , Lord of Mayenne († 1169 ).

On his deathbed, he disinherited his son Hoël with regard to the Duchy of Brittany. Hoël had to settle with the county Nantes. Instead he recognized as his heir his grandson Conan IV to the son of his daughter Berthe from her first marriage with Alain Penthièvre, who was under the tutelage of Odo of Porhoët, the second husband Berthes. Disagreements over this succession led to civil war, which ravaged Brittany for 50 years.
