Concerto for Group and Orchestra

Concerto for Group and Orchestra is a concerto, which was written by Jon Lord with lyrics by Ian Gillan and was performed and recorded in 1969 by the English rock band Deep Purple. It was released in December 1969 as the first live album by the band on Tetragrammaton Records ( USA) and Harvest Records in the UK. Because the scores were lost, it was performed again with reconstructed score 1999. The performance in 1969 was the first time that rock music with a full orchestra.

History

The Concerto was first performed September 24, 1969 by Deep Purple with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold at the Royal Albert Hall. On August 25, 1970, the Concerto was performed a second time with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Foster at the Hollywood Bowl - subsequently the scores were lost. On 25 and 26 September 1999, the reissue with a reconstructed score followed, again at the Royal Albert Hall. On 6 May 2003 a music video / DVD was released a TV broadcast from the year 1970. 2012 appeared a studio version of the concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Musical form

The Concerto has similarities with the concerto grosso, the sinfonia concertante and the orchestra concert. In the first movement ( Moderato - Allegro) working the band and the orchestra as individual units, try to gain dominance over the main theme. In the second movement ( Andante) with vocals by Ian Gillan, the band incorporated more into the orchestral sound. In the third movement ( Vivace - Presto) following Ian Paices drum solo. Band and orchestra are interwoven here closely, the difference between two almost disappears.
