Concise is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Concise is located at 440 m above sea level. Level, 10 km north-east of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The village is located at the foot of the Jura, at the foot of Mont Aubert both sides of the village Bach Ruisseau du Moulin, near the shores of Lake Neuchâtel.

The area of ​​11.4 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the northwest shore of Lake Neuchâtel. The communal land extends from the shore northward over the densely wooded hillside ( Bois de la Cote ) to the Jura ridge of Mont Aubert, on with 1'320 m above sea. M. the highest point of Concise is achieved. A small part of its territory ( de Joux Mutrux ) is located north of the ridge in the catchment area of the river La Vaux. Neighboring communities of Concise are Corcelles- près -Concise, Bonvillars, Provence and Mutrux in the Canton of Vaud and Vaumarcus in the Canton of Neuchâtel.

Population

With 880 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Concise one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 88.2 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 5.9 % and 3.2 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Concise is stable for 150 years. It amounted in 1850 to 746 residents in 1900 to 726 residents in 1950 to 702 inhabitants.

Economy

Concise is a predominantly dominantly agricultural village today. Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the main road 5 of Neuchâtel to Yverdon. On 7 November 1859, the railway line from Yverdon to Neuchâtel was inaugurated with a station in Concise. History

Concise can look back on a very long urban tradition. Along the lakeshore many cultural layers of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age have been discovered with the railway (up to 1859). The stilt houses were probably inhabited in the time 3850-1050 BC. With the construction of the railway line from 1990 to 2000 further excavations were carried out under the supervision of the cantonal monument protection. The lake shore at Concise is now one of the most important stages of lake dwellers north of the Alps. From the Iron Age, a settlement was located on the grounds terrace with Concise. From this period comes a grave mound with a diameter of about 15 m. Furthermore, traces of the Roman period have been preserved.

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1179 under the name Concisa. The name is concidere ( cases in the importance, for example cut tree or precipitated Forest) from the Latin word due. Concise belonged since the Middle Ages to the rule Grandson. North of the village, the Battle of Grandson took place on March 2, 1476, in which the Confederates the troops of Charles the Bold inflicted a defeat. Today, a plaque and a plaque commemorate the battle. After 1476 Grandson was a bailiff under the general rule of Bern and Fribourg. Attractions

Today's Reformed Church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste was probably built in the late 11th century. From this time the bell tower and the semicircular apse originate in the Romanesque style. The other components show gothic style forms of the 15th and 16th century. Further repairs and restorations were carried out in the 17th and 19th centuries. The rectory was built in 1738. In the district of La Rive some houses from the 15th century are preserved. Also, the fabric of the rest of the village has numerous houses from the 17th to the 19th century.

In a valley east of the village is the former Convent of La Lance. The Charterhouse of Saint -Lieu de la Lance was founded in 1317. 1537 was repealed with the introduction of the Reformation. The buildings were sold and served since then as a mansion, with a round tower was added. From the founding period of the small cloister is preserved. The monastery buildings date mainly from the 16th century, and the former church, which has a portal from the 14th century, is now used for secular purposes.

In the hall " La Raisse " north of the village of Concise and far from the shores of Lake Neuchâtel is located in a garden of trees and scrub area an old quarry ( carrière de la Raisse ). The upper part is a relic of Gallo-Roman culture of building north of the Alps and therefore a protected area monuments. Due to its location a little unnoticed, is the quarry still one of the most important testimonies to the Gallo- Roman stone extraction in Central Europe.
