Condyle (anatomy)

As condyle (Greek κόνδυλος Kondylos for " fist ", " bulb ", " knots " or " ankle " ) is referred to in the anatomy of the bony part of a joint, which is also known as articular processes or condyles.

Knee joint

In the knee joint, the upper end of the shinbone (tibia ) and the lower end of the thigh Knochenes (femur) each carry two condyles ( lateral femoral condyle or tibial and medial femoral condyle or tibial ).

Elbow joint

In the elbow joint a condylar ( humeral condyle ) is formed at the lower end of the upper arm bone ( humerus).

Head joint

In the first head joint located at the occipital condyles two ( occipital condyles ) for the connection with the first cervical vertebra atlas. In birds, the occipital bone bears two condyles.

TMJ

The mandible consists of the horseshoe-shaped body of the mandible ( mandibular ) posed by the respectively on both sides of the ascending branch ( ramus ). From the ascending branch going from two additional extensions: The condyle ( condylar process of the mandible and articular process of the mandible ) ( mandibular condyle or caput ) with its cylindrical condyle forms the movable part of the jaw joint.
