Conejos County, Colorado
The Conejos County [ konexos ] ( from the Spanish for " rabbit " ), formerly Guadalupe is a ( County) in the south of the U.S. state of Colorado. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Conejos.
Geography
The county was named after the river that flows through the serpentine large part of the district. On the western edge of the San Luis Valley, it extends from the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo ) to the San Luis Mountains on the Continental Divide. Is enclosed Conejos from the west clockwise to the east by the districts Archuleta, Rio Grande, Alamosa and Costilla. For the latter, the Rio Grande forms a natural border district. In the south of the Conejos eventually borders on the administrative units Rio Arriba and Taos of the U.S. state of New Mexico.

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,400 people in the county. There were 2,980 households and 2,211 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 72.76 percent White, 0.21 percent African American, 1.69 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 21.50 percent from other races groups; 3.61 per cent were descended from two or more races. 58.92 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,980 households out of which 38.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.7 percent were single mothers. 25.8 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent of all households and 11.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.33 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread from 32.1 percent population under 18 years, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 24,744, and the median income for a family was $ 29,066. Males have a median income of $ 26,351, women $ 20,200. The per capita income was $ 12,050. 23.0 percent of the population and 18.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 28.2 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 17.3 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
