Confraternity

Brotherhood, even brotherhood or fraternity is called a community or body of men, among themselves "brothers" call themselves and pursue common interests. The female counterpart of the Brotherhood is the Sisterhood or Sisters of Battle. Some fraternities have opened over the years for women.

Depending on the common interest, there are various types of fraternities:

  • Politically or economically oriented bodies of medieval patricians, see patrician society
  • Religious bodies of clergy and laity: a merger to pious exercises, reciprocal services and charitable purposes which first emerged in the Middle Ages, and an imitation of religious brotherhoods represented. They stood or frequently arose under ecclesiastical supervision, held church services, be imposed penances or granted to foreigners, travelers, defenseless sick or assistance.
  • Trade union bodies of brothers guild or union brothers.
