Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy

The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy is a Roman Catholic religious order, founded in the 19th century for morally neglected girls and women.

History

On November 1, 1862, the first House of Mercy of Mother Teresa Ewa Potocki was founded in Warsaw. Since then, this day as the date of origin of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland applies. Co-founder was Maria Teresa Rondeau. The spiritual Mary Faustina Kowalska Co-founder will be awarded.

Apostolic order

The houses of mercy were a collecting point for women and girls who sought a deep moral conversion and sought new ways. Later converted the houses that were initially a place of work and prayer, in closed educational institutions for girls with an education program of basic and vocational schools. This form of apostolic work consisted in principle until 1962, but has already started earlier in order to take over the run of the Congregation facilities gradually from government side. The remaining facilities were continued by the Congregation as Caritas agencies. Then the sisters began to mentally and psycho- motor handicapped children and to care for sick and neglected women.

On 1 September 1989, the Congregation received the youth education center for girls back to Krakow. This began the return of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy to the apostolic work in the form of comprehensive care for people who sat in a deep moral despair, and needed help in a self-sacrificing form.
