Congressional Space Medal of Honor

The Congressional Space Medal of Honor ( German: Congress - Space Medal of Honor ) was donated by the United States Congress in 1969 to recognize outstanding contributions of astronauts. It is awarded by the President of the United States on a proposal from the NASA administrator and is the highest U.S. award for astronauts.

This award is given for outstanding performance, extraordinary scientific discoveries or acts with remarkable benefits for mankind to astronauts from NASA missions. You may also be awarded to astronauts who have excelled in their courage during a crisis in space contributed to preventing a disaster in space or in the line of duty were killed during a mission.

Receiver

By 2006, 28 astronauts have been awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. More than half of it was given the award posthumously and being challenged by the families of the astronauts in reception.
