Conrad Brunner

Konrad Brunner (* in Muri, † March 9, 1410 ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk. From 1380 to his death he was abbot of the monastery of Muri in the canton of Aargau today.

Biography

Brunner was the son of a wealthy farmer from the nearby hamlet at Muri Hasli. In order to support the monastery, which had been badly damaged by a major fire in 1363, financially, he acquired from its own assets a vineyard in Thalwil. His election as abbot took place on April 26, 1380; he was the first head of the abbey large peasant origin. 1386 sacked the monastery, the Confederates during the Sempacherkriegs. To make amends for the damage suffered, gave Duke Leopold IV of Habsburg in 1399, the parish Villmergen and 1403 the parishes Sursee and Oberlunkhofen.

The Benedictine monastic rules were hardly followed and it had now become a benefice economy with which the monks each have their own budget financed together with staff. 1402 the abbot had access to a court to ensure that the income from the parish Sursee could be used at least temporarily, for the reconstruction of the monastic buildings. He also limited the number of benefices in order not to overload the monastery economy.
