Constance Lloyd

Constance Mary Wilde ( born Lloyd, born January 2, 1858 in London, † April 7, 1898 in Genoa) was an English children's book author and the wife of Oscar Wilde.

Life

Lloyd came from a wealthy family and was referred to in her youth as gracefully beautiful. She was well cared for, even after her marriage with the writer Oscar Wilde got it in about 1000 pounds per year. She learned Wilde in 1884 know, and they were married. The couple settled in London in Chelsea. Then they had two sons, Cyril (1885-1915) and Vyvyan ( 1886-1967 ).

Shortly after the birth of sons were rumors about a homosexuality of her husband, what Constance but did not stop to continue to keep her husband, although Oscar Wilde, very open bypassed for those times where homosexuality among men was criminalized with its tendency. Despite her confidence in her husband she had growing distrust in Lord Alfred Douglas, the Oscar Wilde a long time led a relationship.

1895 her husband was arrested for indecency and sentenced to two years in prison and forced labor in prison to Reading. Due to the ban, she went into exile, lived among others in Nuremberg and changed its name in Holland. Nevertheless, it was never enough, contrary to the advice of friends and family for a divorce. She died for unknown reasons and was buried with the name Constance Mary Lloyd. Years later, the line " Wife of Oscar Wilde " (wife of Oscar Wilde) was engraved on her grave stone.

Works

Constance Wilde wrote in addition to several articles for the journal, edited by Oscar Wilde The Woman's World and two books of children's stories.
