Constantin Bakaleinikoff

Constantin Romanovich Bakaleinikoff (Russian Константин Романович Бакалейников, Konstantin Romanovich Bakaleinikow; born April 26, 1898 in Moscow, † September 3, 1966 in Los Angeles ) was a Russian composer. Bakaleinikoff was nominated for his film music several times for the Academy Award, but never able to secure him.

Life

Bakaleinikoff studied at the Moscow Conservatory and left Russia after the revolution. In the U.S., he first worked as a conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, before the late 1920s, the film turned to music. Bakaleinikoff composed for Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, before moving in 1940 for a short time at Columbia Pictures. He then went to RKO Pictures and worked there until the studio closed in 1955. 1938 Bakaleinikoff was nominated for his music for Something to sing about for the first time for the Academy Award. He worked mostly as musical director of a film production or conducted the recordings of film music. Bakaleinikoff was married to silent film actress Fritzi Ridgeway. His brother Misha was also a film composer.
