Constantin Meunier

Constantin Meunier ( born April 12, 1831 in Etterbeek in Brussels, † April 4, 1905 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian sculptor and painter. His work is attributable to the naturalism.

Life

Constantin Meunier studied at the Academy in Brussels. He spent three years as an assistant to the sculptor Charles Auguste Fraikin. In 1868 he founded, together with other Belgian avant-garde - including Charles De Groux and Félicien Rops - Société Libre des Beaux -Arts in Brussels. In 1880 he exhibited in the Salon of Ghent in 1896 and had great success in Paris. 1887-1896 he was a professor at the Académie Louvain. Meunier was a Freemason and belonged to the lodge Les Amis Philanthropes in Brussels.

Performance

Meunier began as a painter and created initially mainly pictures with religious themes. From 1880 he turned to the representation of working people. He became convinced that he could better handle with sculptural means this issue and was now primarily a sculptor. As such, Meunier was widely known and recognized. The idealized representation of working people was continued in the 20th century socialist realism. He is considered the greatest Belgian sculptor of the 19th century next to George Minne.

How Meunier glorified the sculptor Alfonso Canciani from the Austro-Hungarian Friuli the world of work.

Afterlife

In his apartment building designed by himself (1900) in Brussels is the Musée Founded in 1939, Meunier, which manages his works. 1931 a monument Meuniers of Edmond Valeriola was erected in his home town of Etterbeek. From 1982-1998 the 500 Francs banknote in Belgium Meunier was dedicated.

The asteroid ( 10079 ) Meunier was named after him.
